It doesn’t matter how old you are, adult or child, anyone can be at risk of developing celiac disease. While symptoms like diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain, and heartburn aren’t exclusive to celiac disease, they can be a telling sign that it could be what’s ailing you. A food allergen test in Stamford, CT can be a useful way to learn about why your body is rejecting specific foods. You’ll be able to find out if you do indeed have it or if there’s something else affecting your body.
At Dietitian For All, I can help you put together a custom diet plan and learn the best ways to manage your symptoms if you haven’t been diagnosed yet. Keep reading for some tips that I have for eating now and into the future.
Animal proteins
Animal proteins are always going to be safe foods to eat as you can still safely eat grain-fed beef without any issues. However, your diet should focus on lean meats rather than those that are salty and fatty. Lean cuts of beef, chicken, eggs, turkey, pork, fish, shellfish, and lamb are excellent sources of protein. If you’ve never been a big meat eater and got iron primarily from eating wheat bread, red meats are an excellent source of this mineral to ensure that you don’t start to suffer from anemia.
Fruits and vegetables
The upside to celiac disease is that you have to look for fiber and nutrients in other places than traditional grains. This will encourage you to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet, which is something you definitely can’t go wrong with. Fruits that provide a high level of fiber are apples, bananas, oranges, and strawberries. Make it a point to not peel your apple as that’s where most of the fiber can be found. Additionally, dark-colored vegetables like carrots, beets, and broccoli are great sources of fiber. The darker the color of your vegetable, the more fiber you’ll get. Seek out veggies like collard greens, spinach, and artichokes.
Legumes
With celiac disease, you can still enjoy some of your favorite dishes even after taking the wheat out. Beans, lentils, peanuts, and soy can all be included in your diet without causing a reaction. If you’re someone who is going to miss peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, try looking for gluten-free bread that is made with rice, almonds, or quinoa instead of wheat. You can still have your favorite sandwich without any risk of getting sick from the bread.
Nuts and seeds
If you’re looking for another source of fiber as well as protein and healthy fats, nuts and seeds are perfect for you. Cashews, almonds, pecans, and pistachios are great ways to make sure that you’re getting additional protein. Nuts and seeds are also high in fiber to help with your overall gut health.
